Here is where the spirit thrives

I’ve been thinking a lot about recent events, as I know many of us are. These seem like shocking times to be alive.

In 2012 Neil Gaiman gave the Keynote Address at the University of the Arts. It’s made the rounds of the internet since then and with good reason. But now, one of the things he said means more to me than it ever did:

Life is sometimes hard. Things go wrong, in life and in love and in business and in friendship and in health and in all the other ways that life can go wrong. And when things get tough, this is what you should do.

Make good art.

I have made more art this year, started more art, made more plans for more art, than I have in the last four years. Art is what I cling to when things get weird, and I am clinging like old ivy believe you me. But art alone won’t feed us and it doesn’t provide oxygen. Only the green and growing things do that, and I believe it is to the earth that we must all turn in these dark times. The wild, green world is the key to sustenance, to nourishment, to reassurance, and to strength for whatever battles might lie ahead. Here is a small reminder.

This puts into wonderful perspective recent events in my life, especially of looking towards the earth. There is more to tell but this is not the space to do it.
